28 Feb Alexandra – A Bereaved Donor Story
While my two week old daughter (and firstborn) fought for her life in the hospital, she was unable to have my breast milk. All she could have was TPN. I pumped day and night in the hospital right by her bedside, in hopes that soon she would be well enough to have my milk again. Unfortunately, she lost her battle with NEC, which stemmed from a possible congenital clotting disorder that went undetected for too long. Heartbroken, I could no longer pump. I had over 100 ounces of breast milk sitting in the freezer that I did not want to go to waste. I immediately thought about all of the babies whom I could help.
In memory of my daughter, I wanted to donate every ounce of my liquid gold to a reputable organization who supported this vision. I was informed about Mid-Atlantic Mothers’ Milk Bank through the hospital. I am grateful that this organization provided me with a safe outlet to donate my breastmilk so I could give other families another chance at hope.
