Maverick – A Recipient turns into a Donor

My son, Maverick, was born in September 2022 with some known medical complexities that required a NICU stay and early surgery. His first night in the hospital, away from me, he received donor milk. When his NICU stay extended to four surgeries, 88 days, and a long time NPO (unable to take any milk), my husband suggested I look into becoming a milk donor as a way to help channel my grief over our journey into something helpful. Luckily, Maverick recovered medically, learned to take a bottle, breastfeed, and eventually eat solids. He is a happy, growing boy now at 15 months. I am so grateful we were able to share with the milk bank and have something positive come from a difficult start.
