Zoe’s Milk – A Donor Story

I remember being asked if the reason for donating was due to an infant’s death or an oversupply. I said it was the latter but really it was both. Our twin girls Isla and Zoe were born on March 15 at 25 weeks and 1 day gestation. Zoe passed away 2 days later. I was pumping around the clock and my body was prepared to make milk for 2 babies so I was producing a lot of milk. The first time I pumped, a few hours after delivery, I was shocked milk came out. I knew that after a c-section it can take 3-5 days to produce milk, and that was with full-term deliveries. So much was out of our control at that time with Zoe’s death and Isla’s time in the NICU (174 days) but one thing I could do was pump and produce milk. So that is exactly what I did. I always thought of all the milk I donated as Zoe’s milk. I take comfort in the thought of Zoe’s milk helping other babies. I am proud that I was able to donate nearly 2,000 ounces.
