24 Sep Highmark Health gives $490K in grants to several nonprofits
Pittsburgh Business Times (September 23, 2024) – Highmark Health and the Highmark Foundation on Monday gave out grants totaling $490,000 to several nonprofits within the Pittsburgh-based health organization’s operating area, including the Mid-Atlantic Mothers’ Milk Bank out of southwestern Pennsylvania.
The awards ceremony was part of the Highmark Bright Blue Futures Awards Program that was held Monday for the second year in a row. The program has provided funding to nonprofit organizations all over the region to promote health equity.
The nonprofits honored other than the Mid-Atlantic Mothers’ Milk Bank were the Center for Population Health in Johnstown; the Maternity Care Coalition in Philadelphia; the Urban League Buffalo in Buffalo, New York; and the Westside Family Healthcare in Wilmington, Delaware.
Each organization received the nomination after a rigorous selection process that included 250 applicants.
The Mid-Atlantic Mothers’ Milk Bank provides donor milk to infants who are medically fragile in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and elsewhere. The milk bank, which has helped reduce a condition that puts premature infants in danger, was nominated for the award by the Henry L. Hillman Foundation.
“We are continuing to celebrate the impact these organizations are making that are achieving a breakthrough in health equity for individuals and families across our footprint,” said Highmark Health SVP of Community Affairs Kenya T. Boswell in a statement.
Also honored Monday was mini grants from the Highmark Health and Highmark Foundation that included the Latino Community Center in Pittsburgh and the Pennsylvania Coalition for Oral Health in Delmont. Also receiving the Rising Star designation was Catholic Charities in Wilmington, Delaware; Hudson Headwaters Health Network in Albany, New York; Pennsylvania CASA Association in Bethlehem; Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital Foundation in Lancaster; Penn State Health in Hershey; Roswell Park Alliance Foundation in Buffalo, New York; South End Children’s Cafe in Albany, New York; and West Virginia Health Right in Charleston, West Virginia.
