Riya: a donor story

My name is Riya, and I’m honored to share my journey as a milk donor with the Mid-Atlantic Mothers’ Milk Bank. Originally from Nepal, I came to the United States in 2018 after marrying my wonderful husband in 2017, whose unwavering support has been a cornerstone of every step I’ve taken. My path has been one of transformation, purpose, and service, both in my homeland and here in Pittsburgh. Before moving to the U.S., I earned a bachelor’s degree in management in Nepal and was deeply involved in journalism and community service. I worked as a program producer, reporter, and radio jockey at various radio stations, including Saptakoshi FM, Radio Priwartan, Radio Ramdhuni, and Radio Nepal F.M. One of the most meaningful projects I contributed was a radio drama series addressing sexual violence against women, produced in collaboration with BBC Media Action. I also worked closely with NGOs and INGOs like Save the Children, helping amplify community voices through radio and grassroots initiatives.

After settling in the U.S., I felt a calling to pursue healthcare—a passion that had always lived quietly within me. I began my studies at CCAC Allegheny in 2019 and transitioned into nursing in 2020. In December 2023, I proudly graduated from nursing school, and by January 2024, I became a licensed Registered Nurse. Today, I serve my community as a bedside nurse at St. Clair Hospital in Pittsburgh. In October 2024, we joyfully welcomed our beautiful baby boy, Neevons, into the world. That moment marked a new chapter in our lives—one filled with love, learning, and deep gratitude.

During my postpartum journey, I saw a television ad highlighting the needs of babies in NICUs. It deeply moved me. I had been producing an abundance of milk, and I knew I wanted to help. That’s when I decided to donate to the Mid-Atlantic Mothers’ Milk Bank. Knowing that my milk has reached over 60 hospital units and supported individual outpatients who rely on human milk to survive at home fills me with immense gratitude. It’s a reminder that even the smallest act of kindness can have a life-changing impact. I encourage every mother who is able to consider donating. Your milk could be the lifeline for a fragile newborn. For me, it was not just a donation—it was a continuation of my lifelong commitment to care, compassion, and community, made possible by the love and encouragement of my husband, who has stood beside me through every chapter of this journey.
